WWI Handley-Page Bomber from Two LiteStiks

Part of this article is also in December, 2001 issue of  Electric Flight International.

This awesome Handley-Page bomber is from two Litestik kits, a little balsa and a lot of ingenuity - the latter supplied by Jim Hendry, the rest comes from 'GWS', a model shop and a hardware store for the blue foam nose. Photo was taken by Dick Baker.

First of all, this WWI Handley-Page bomber is made out of two 'Litesticks'. The only things that are not Litesticks are the centre vertical fin and fuselage. I shortened the bottom wing halves by one section each as they fit on the sides of then fuselage. The top wing span is 36 inches (914mm) and the bottom win span is 33 inches (838 mm). The motors are stand Litestik and I used two 8 x 6 APC slow flyer props only because they look better than the big orange Litestick props.

Only the lower elevator moves. I coupled the two rudders with linkage, used two HS50 servos, a C-5 ESC by Great Planes and RC Direct 6-channel receiver. It weights 11 oz (312 g) without batteries. The fuselage is simple box made out of 1/20" (i.3 mm) balsa with a chunk of blue foam for the rounded nose. The motor are wired in parallel. I will fly on 6 x 270 mAh NiCads for about 3 minutes but it is too realistic for comfort, so I fly it on 8 x 720 mAh NiMH.
